Why did we start to celebrate Halloween?

Halloween (also spelled Hallowe'en) is an annual holiday observed on October 31. Some folklorists have detected its origins in the Roman feast of Pomona, the goddess of fruits and seeds or in the festival of the dead called Parentalia, it is more typically linked to the Celtic festival of Samhain, and the Christian holiday All Saints' Day, but is today largely a secular celebration.

Halloween activities include trick-or-treating, wearing costumes and attending costume parties, carving jack-o'-lanterns, ghost tours, bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, pranks, telling scary stories, and watching horror films.

Many families that celebrate Halloween carve a pumpkin into a frightening or comical face and place it on their doorstep after dark. Elements of the autumn season, such as pumpkins, corn husks, and scarecrows, are also prevalent, besides Frankenstein, Mummies and Dracula. Homes are often decorated with these types of symbols around Halloween.

Halloween imagery includes themes of death, evil, the occult, magic, or mythical monsters. Traditional characters include ghosts, witches, skeletons, vampires, werewolves, bats, and black cats. The colors black and orange are associated with the celebrations, perhaps because of the darkness of night and the color of fire, autumn leaves, or pumpkins.

Orange and black, colors associated with pumpkins and darkness respectively, figure prominently in most Halloween decorations. The most celebrated Halloween decoration is the jack-o'-lantern, traditionally a hollowed-out pumpkin carved to resemble a grotesque face and illuminated by a candle placed inside.

It was said that to meet a witch you had to put your clothes on wrong side out and you had to walk backwards on Halloween night. Then at midnight you would see a witch.

When the early settlers came to America, they brought along their belief in witches. In American the legends of witches spread and mixed with the beliefs of others, the Native Americans - who also believed in witches, and then later with the black magic beliefs of the African slaves.

The black cat has long been associated with witches. Many superstitions have evolved about cats. It was believed that witches could change into cats. Some people also believed that cats were the spirits of the dead.

One of the best known superstitions is that of the black cat. If a black cat was to cross your path you would have to turn around and go back because many people believe if you continued bad luck would strike you.
